What is a Unified Social Credit Code?
A Unified Social Credit Code is an 18-character identifier assigned to many organisations registered in Mainland China. It is commonly shown on a company's business licence and is often abbreviated in English as USCC.
Because company names can be translated in different ways, the USCC helps identify the specific registered entity being checked.
Where can you find it?
Ask for a clear copy of the company's current business licence. The code is generally displayed near the top of the document. It may also appear on contracts, invoices, corporate filings or other official documents.
Copy the characters carefully. Confusion between letters and numbers can lead to an incorrect search or a false mismatch.
Why the code matters to overseas buyers
An overseas buyer may know a supplier only by an English name, website or marketplace shop. Those labels do not necessarily identify the company that will sign the agreement or receive payment.
Matching the USCC to the Chinese legal name provides a stronger starting point for reviewing registration, ownership, corporate changes and other available company information.
What should be compared?
- The USCC on the business licence
- The Chinese legal name connected with that code
- The company named on the contract and invoice
- The supplier's website and marketplace identity
- The entity named in payment instructions
Any difference should be explained and documented before you rely on the information.
What a matching code does not prove
A correct code confirms identity more effectively, but it does not establish creditworthiness, factory ownership, production capacity, product quality or future performance. Those questions require additional evidence and transaction-specific due diligence.
When to request professional verification
Professional verification may be useful when you cannot read the Chinese licence, the supplier uses several company names, the invoice and beneficiary differ, the order value is significant or public information needs interpretation.
